Seagate announces 660 SSD, its first solid-state drive for consumers

Seagate has unveiled 660 SSD, its first solid-state drive (SSD)  for consumers, while also announcing its next-generation enterprise SSDs, Seagate 600 Pro SSD and the Seagate 1200 SSD.

Seagate 600 SSD is a laptop-friendly drive that offers nearly four times faster boot times and two times faster application load times when compared with a standard hard drive. The Seagate 600 SSD is available in multiple z-heights including a 5mm-high drive making it ideal for use in most ultra-thin devices. The drive features up to 480GB of capacity and incorporates a 6Gbps SATA interface.

There's no word yet on the pricing or availability details of the Seagate 600 SSD.

"We are pleased to announce these new flash memory products. With these new drives, Seagate solidifies its commitment to the flash-based storage market by delivering enterprise SSDs and server-side solutions as well as client solutions," said Gary Gentry, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate's solid state drive business.

Seagate 600 Pro, on the other hand, is an entry-level enterprise drive that aims to combine fast performance and lower power to deliver performance efficiency and IOPS/ watt value. It, too, is available in up to 480GB capacities and comes in 2.5-inch form factor with a 6Gbps SATA interface.

The Seagate 1200 SSD is designed for demanding enterprise storage and server applications with complex, write-intensive mixed workloads, such as high-performance computing and data analytics. It incorporates a dual-port 12Gbps SAS connector, while retaining backwards compatibility with 6Gbps SAS environments. The Seagate 1200 SSD is available with up to 800GB capacity and comes in either a 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch form factor.

"By adding more SSDs to our family of hard disk and solid state hybrid drives, we now have the broadest portfolio of storage products in the industry, delivering one-stop shopping for our customers and partners," Gentry added.

Madonna Auctions Painting To Raise $7Million For Girls’ Education

Madonna sold an abstract painting by French artist Fernand Leger for $7.16 million on Tuesday to raise funds for girls’ education projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere.
The 1921 painting, “Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge,” which carried a pre-sale estimate of up to $7 million, was purchased by an unidentified buyer at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art sale in New York, according to the auction house’s website.
The pop singer said in April that she bought the painting in 1990 and that selling it would combine her passions for art and education by raising funds for the Ray of Light Foundation, a non-profit organization offering vocational training for street children and poor farmers.
“I cannot accept a world where women or girls are wounded, shot or killed for either going to school or teaching in girls’ schools. We don’t have time to be complacent,” Madonna said in a statement last month.
“I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable – Educating Girls!”
Madonna has adopted two children from Malawi in southern Africa and plans to build 10 schools there.

Owners of Google Glass are reporting that Google is rolling out the device's first software update, and changing the version name to XE5.

According to Phandroid, the update's improvements include bug fixes, optimizations and improvements. What's more, data syncing in the background now requires power and Wi-Fi connection, transcription of queries and messages is faster, and the battery-charge estimation has been improved.

The new features include incoming Google+ and Hangout notifications, with the ability to comment and +1 posts directly through Glass.

The update can be received over-the-air; to initiate it, the device must be plugged into a charger.

Fashion Face-Off: Emma Watson, Miranda Kerr and Dakota Fanning in Cutout Couture

by Jessie Rosen

What do Emma Watson, Miranda Kerr and Dakota Fanning have in common? Taste in Met Gala gowns, apparently. Oh, and the desire to show of tons of skin!
All three starlets showed up to fashion's most famous red carpet in strikingly similar dresses. Luckily, they look equally gorgeous despite causing triple takes.
We're partial to the Harry Potter star's Prabal Gurung gown, mostly because of the unique shape. Not to mention the fact that it's Hermoine wearing it!
That said, the Victoria's Secret Angel offers stiff competition in Michael Kors, while Fanning rocked a more age-appropriate version with the sheer panels on her Rodarte design (we're not loving the drop waist though, Dakota).

Possible LG Optimus G2 picture shows up on the Net

By Staska

LG is becoming more and more interesting by day.

They’ve already had the greatest quarter in years, shipping 10.3 million smartphones in January-March. And are on the way to have an even better one with worldwide roll-out of their LG Optimus G Pro phablet and an updated cheap Optimus L II line. And then they have the next generation Optimus G2 in the works for Q3, with some interesting unique features to take on Samsung’s Galaxy S4.

Today, what appears to be the first live picture of LG’s next generation device leaked to the net, which may be that ultrathin Optimus G2 we told you about few weeks ago:

Multiple rumors suggest that the new LG Optimus G2 will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM, 5” 1080p display and 13 megapixel camera.
At this point we expect LG to announce Optimus G2 in the beginning of September, right before IFA electronics tradeshow in Berlin, and to show it off there. The device will probably start shipping in late September/early October.

Yoshida: “PS4 Version of Games Will be the Best”

 by Ravi Sinha
While the PS3 was maligned and insulted for having the worst ports of multiplatfom games, the PS4 is being touted as having exclusive content at launch time for games like Watch_Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
Sure enough, SCE Worldwide Studios boss, Shuhei Yoshida talks about how , “We need to make sure users consider the PS4 version to be the best and the one that they want to play.
“That might mean that the graphics are better, the controller is more comfortable, or the point I mentioned earlier about the console being more user-friendly, like you don’t have to turn the power on and off or you can switch between your game and Netflix at will.”
In conversation with 4Gamer.net, Yoshida also talked about how “you can start playing as soon as you want to and quit whenever you like” on smartphones and tablets and that, “PS4 will be a home console that can do that too.”
We’ll see how far that rings true when the PS4 releases this Holiday season.
