KARACHI: Kamran Khan said on Friday in his programme ‘Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Sath’ that Karachi will see an investment of 35 billion dollars in the next few years. This investment will be jointly made by Bahria Town and Abu Dhabi Group of the United Arab Emirates.
He said that the Karachiites are wary of the hollow promises made to them in the past, but this time round it seems that this project will not disappoint them because this project has Pakistan’s biggest real estate group as well as the Abu Dhabi Group whose owner happens to be a member of the federal cabinet of the UAE, Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, who is also known as a great friend of Pakistan.
The founder of Bahria Town, Malik Riaz, while talking to Kamran Khan in his programme, said that the Bahria Town in the last 16 years had given the people 10 times more than what it has promised them. He said that the hundreds of thousands of members of the town can testify to this. Malik Riaz said Bahria Town and Abu Dhabi Group together will change the economic landscape of the country and they will revive its economy. They will provide employment to 2.5 million people. He said that whether it’s the internet city, the medical city or the sports city, or any other thing which was manufactured in Dubai or Malaysia will be manufactured in Pakistan in a better manner. He said that the site for the project in Karachi has been selected. A new city will come into being spread over 1,600 acres.
Commenting on a different issue, Malik Riaz said that if he had gifted the house in Bahria Town in Lahore to President Zardari, then the government of Punjab would have had its record.
Commenting on the menace of extortion in Karachi, Kamran Khan said that the latest wave of killings on account of extortion money has claimed the lives of two traders. Although, killing in Karachi nowadays is not news, yet this incident is significant because once again two Karachi traders have been killed in the city because they had refused to pay extortion money.
The deceased traders belonged to the same Shershah’s scrap market which had come under a terrorist attack in October 2010 in which 12 traders were killed. Kamran Khan said that on Friday, the vice president of the same market, Iftikhar Baig, and its general secretary Shakil were shot dead.
According to reports they were punished for not having paid extortion money. Police and administration are silent over the present wave of killing related to extortion.
Commenting on the political situation, Kamran Khan said that last month the Pakistan People’s Party had dealt the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz a blow when in just four days, three members of the National Assembly belonging to the PML-N joined the PPP. Preceding that, a leader of the PML-N from Haripur and some members of the provincial assembly of the same party had joined the PPP.
On Friday, the PML-N turned the tables on the PPP when nine of its (the PPP’s) legislators of the Punjab Assembly joined the PML-N. Moreover, two PML-Q MNAs also joined the PML-N.
Kamran Khan said that some PPP sources have been saying that now its their turn and from 12 to 20 PML-N MPAs are about to join the PPP.
He said if that happens, it will be a PPP hitting a six. If that does not happen, then it can be said that the PML-N has taken an edge over the PPP by virtue of the joining of the PML-N by nine PPP MPAs at one go. The significant thing here is that a majority of the defecting MPAs belonged to south Punjab. It is to be seen how much political advantage does the PML-N gain in the south Punjab by virtue of the decision of the nine MPAs to join the PML-N.
Commenting on the rumours over the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) quitting the government, Kamran Khan said that one can see tension developing between the two parties. The MQM has been protesting over the PPP government’s decision to withdraw cases against the accused of gang war while the PPP has been expressing its surprise over such information, in fact they have been categorically saying that the news is baseless and no such thing ever happened. Kamran Khan said that it is significant to note that there have been speculations over the last many days that the MQM will soon quit the Sindh government and start sitting on the opposition benches after which the MQM and PPP will join hands in establishing a caretaker government in Sindh that is acceptable to the two parties.
Commenting on the latest important decisions of the government, Kamran Khan said that the government has taken the very important decisions of constructing the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline and handing over the Gwadar port to China in the last weeks of its tenure. It has been decided that the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline will be constructed.
This is a very important matter as far as the region and the Pakistan’s energy needs are concerned. President Asif Ali Zardari has played a direct role in the matter.Kamran Khan also said that all the matters concerning the handing over of Gwadar port to a Chinese company have been taken care of. The Chinese government has hailed the decision.
Speaking with Kamran Khan in his programme, Nazeer Leghari of Daily Jang said that it is highly probable that the MQM will sit on the opposition benches and then the PPP and the MQM will together form the caretaker government. He said the election commission at the moment has no mechanism to stop the two parties doing so.
Special correspondent of Geo News Afzal Nadeem Dogar said in the programme that the crime of extortion is being considered as the most familiar, simple and profitable in Karachi. He said that 12 traders were killed in Karachi in just one week over their refusal to pay extortion money.
The chief of the Karachi Tajir Ittehad Ateeq Mir said in the programme that traders are being targeted in every area of the city.
